Our Ocean

"Over 60% of our planet is covered by water more than a mile deep. The deep sea is the largest habitat on earth and is largely unexplored. More people have traveled into space than have traveled to the deep ocean realm...." - The Blue Planet Seas of Life

Then again, I'll be sharing with you one of my favourite topics - The Mysterious deep sea!

Let's start-off with the layers of the sea. There are together 5 zones, and more than 80% are in complete darkness if without the presence of light produced by luminiscent creatures (creatures that produce their own light).

No sunlight reaches the Midnight Zone and the Abyss, which covers the ocean till its basin. The temperature of the water is also freezing cold. Water pressure at this zone is high, and because of the absence of plants due to lack of sunlight, the level of oxygen is extremely low too. But despite the harsh environment, quite a number of creatures inhabit these waters! The sperm whales are known to dive down to the Midnight Zone in search of food too! Some creatures living deeper than this zone do not have eyes, cos they don't need them!

In the Hadalpelagic Zone, which consist of mostly deep sea trenches and canyons, has a temperature of just above freezing. Invertebrates such as tubeworms and starfish can be found in these crushing depths. The deepest point in the ocean is located in the Mariana Trench off the coast of Japan at 35,797 feet (10,911 meters). Most living creatures found here are usually enormous.

If mermaids do live in the deep sea, imagine how they'll look like! No eyes, sharp teeth, red in colour... do you even think they'll have nice smooth-skinned naked bodies?? I bet they have claws too.
